TRAINEE reporter Lucy Mason scored double scoops for papers hundreds of miles apart.
Lucy is on the Press Association’s 17-week Multi Media Foundation Course in Newcastle and became the first person on the Autumn course to nail a splash.
But no sooner had she finished reading her by-line on the front of the Newcastle Sunday Sun, than she was filing copy for her home title and getting the splash there as well.
Not bad going considering her home title is the Jersey Evening Post.
Lucy’s first lead was a story about a student who included a home-made porn film in an art exhibition.
The exhibition shut early amid an electronic blizzard of angry emails.
Lucy followed this up by attending a Crown Court case featuring a Newcastle university lecturer who flew to the Channel Islands after grooming a 13-year-old girl on a social networking site.
Dr Trevor Jackson, who pleaded guilty, and who is awaiting sentencing, has been told he is facing jail.
Lucy’s account of the case earned her a second splash in a week.
She said: “After a couple of hard weeks of law and shorthand this has really picked up and left me wanting more by-lines.”
Foundation Course leader Paul Jones said: “This was a great result for Lucy who was having a very good course anyway.
“She has really set the bar high for everyone else.”
