Why journalism?

If you enjoy meeting people, love communicating, have a passion for writing and a hunger for news, journalism may well be the profession for you.

And quite simply, there has never been a more exciting time to be a journalist.

There have been massive changes in the newsroom over the last couple of years as the full impact of publishing on the web has become apparent. And those changes are likely to continue.

Newspapers now produce video, broadcasters write websites and journalists often get a chance to tell stories across all mediums. It makes the job even more challenging, but also great fun.

All that means that to be a successful reporter you need not only the same skills that have been taught on our course in Newcastle since 1969, but many new skills too. Many editors now view a reporter’s ability to shoot video and edit video as core competencies rather than futuristic requirements.

Not all courses offer this training as part of the course, but we do. Video is taught in the 17th week of both courses, online reporting is embedded into our existing modules. This reflects current practice in most newsrooms where reporters are often writing for a variety of different products as well as for print and online.

If you think you have what it takes to be a reporter, apply online now.
